Read my not altogether pleasant review of Emily Ruete’s, also known as Princess Salme of Zanzibar and Oman
I am having a hard time reading this book due to the gross factor: bugs. I mean, if you are going to turn into something not-human; why not something more cuddly? or at least something with less than 6 legs? However, I still insist on reading it because people keep comparing it with ‘Blackass‘ and i needed to find out for myself if it’s truly a fair comparison. I have decided not to go through this alone though; after all, there is love in sharing… Enjoy!! One morning, as Gregor Samsa was waking up from anxious dreams, he discovered that in bed he had […]
2 months ago, I listed 5 books by Nigerian Authors I was dying to get my hands on. Unfortunately, I have only gotten to read 2 of these books fighting back tears which I subsequently reviewed here and here. Thankfully, neither of these books disappointed me and my resolve to complete that list remains as strong as ever. Luckily, the book gods must have heard my cry and they sought to provide encouragement in the most unexpected way.
I hate having an accent. I hate it when people ask me to repeat things sometimes and I can hear them laughing inside because I am not American. Now I reply Father’s Igbo with English. I would do it with Mother too, but I don’t think she will go for that just yet. When people ask where I am from, Mother wants me to say Nigeria. The first time I said Philadelphia, she said, “say Nigeria.” The second time she slapped the back of my head and asked, in Igbo, “is something wrong with your head?”
I found this story during my exploration of the Okada books App/Store (there will be a review on that soon). Sharon Salu is quite an accomplished writer, and I think i have fallen in love with her stories. She has an extensive body of work published on her website, and I suggest you check it out. Bewaji’s story is Sherlock Holmes-like in many ways, the character is certainly eccentric enough, and has a unique sense of humour. I loved this story and I would gladly pay for it and any subsequent installments; However, it is available for free download now. So Enjoy yaselves…
