  • Happy UK publication day to "Taking Up Space" by Chelsea Kwakye and Ore Ogunbiyi. I'm a bit skeptical about books that claim to be "The Black Girl's Manifesto" for anything. However, I decided to give this one a chance since its subject matter is diversity in (foreign) educational systems. This is a subject I believe will be of some concern to me soon so I'm invested in this conversation. Thanks for the review copy @merkybooks . I look forward to reading this.

  • Let's talk about regrets. You know, those decisions you make when you're super excited and want to spread the joy around to as many people as possible. Like lending an acquaintance your new autographed book and discovering on its return that this person may be a book sadist. 😩 I haven't had the heart to fully assess the damage done to this book since I got it back last year. It's just too sad... What's the biggest book loss you've had because you made the mistake of handing it over to people who hate books?
  • May was such a beautiful month, I'm a bit reluctant to accept that it's over but we must move... I finished 4 books this month and they were all beautiful. Really. 1. Daisy Jones and The Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid. This was pure joy to listen to, #Audible, the story wasn't extra spectacular but the manner of delivery was refreshing and I enjoyed every second of it. I will not be reviewing this though but I'll tell you it's worth all of your time. (And money) 2. Purple Hibiscus by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. A second reading was necessary for the bookclub @naijabookwormclub, and I found myself discovering new villains in this book. My original review still stands though (check it out via the link in my bio) but I am now revising my previous judgement that this was Chimamanda's best work. She has done so much better after this. 3. Travellers by Helon Habila. My review is up already (link in bio) and I'm excited to see this one with the masses come June 20th. Someone was talking about Nigerian publishers picking it up. I hope they do. I also hope they don't fuck it up. 4. Manchester Happened by Jennifer Nansubuga Makumbi. I thoroughly enjoyed this and recommend it. My full review should be up this week. Please don't sleep on it. Reading this was seamless and fun. That's it. May wrapped up in a virtual bow. How was your reading in May?
  • And... the declutter continues. Not that I'll ever think of books as clutter, what's going on here is more like a redistribution of energy. I reviewed this memoir last year and it wasn't too shabby. Personally, I'm not here for the "let's package my life story as an inspirational book" vibe but I'll admit that I did learn a few things from Chika Ike.   • I don't know what it is about not having to go to work on a weekday that energizes me but this public holiday is already yielding fruit. My review of Helon Habila's soon-to-be released novel is up now. In Travellers, Helon Habila tells immigration stories designed not to elicit reactions or emotions but takes a look at immigrants and their various motivations for seeking greener pastures. The characters in this book all have various reasons for abandoning their homes. From escaping violence and terrorism to a quest for acceptance to trying to build a new life or fix a broken one...   • To say this book wasn't my cup of tea would be a major understatement. However, most people seem intent on loving it and who am I to stand in the way of love.   • Being in a book club has been an interesting experience for me. Fact is, I'm something of a lone wolf who can't abide routines, so absolutely having to read a book every month is a struggle even when I'd probably read every month anyways... Am I making sense? It's like when you already have a plan to do something, then somebody tells you to do it, then you don't feel like doing it anymore because somebody asked you to do it. In this case, that somebody is me which is why I will begin rereading this book that I love so much for @naijabookwormclub just in time for the monthly review this week. What are you currently reading? Are you in a bookclub? Do you sometimes feel like being a little rebel?
  • BIRTHDAY🎉🥂 I really hope you read the look on my face as smug, otherwise this post died on arrival. 😏 The theme of the past year was "Getting Your Shit Together". This reality snuck up on me and it took waking up this beautiful morning, listening to Destiny's child for me to have this epiphany. I did get all the things I wanted. Everything that had me pulling my hair out at 25 has been sorted. Now, to another set of hair pulling out thingys... 😄 Not today though. Today, I'm listening to the backstreet boys at 5:41 'cos, "I want it that way"💃🏽💃🏽 P.s. My kiosk is open for gifts. Tainks 😎
